The Why Not Wheel
Jim's Why Not Wheel is one of the simplest, but most powerful tools we can give you to touch hearts and change lives.
We all have a story about who we are and what people like us can and cannot do. We usually take that story for granted, we don't think about it or question it. It runs in the background like an algorithm guiding our decisions.
The Why Not Wheel brings the story into the daylight and makes us challenge it with facts. It is an important tool for our Inspirational Leaders in the Symmetry Inspirational Leader Accreditation. The film above is from that course.
You can use the Why Not Wheel for yourself, or a friend or colleague. The film above guides you through how to do it. You also have instructions below:
All you need is a piece of paper and a pen.
1. Have a big, exciting Outcome you'd like to achieve but think you probably can't.
2. Draw a wheel with spokes.
3. On the outside of each spoke write one reason 'Why Not'? (for example, 'Because I can't code in Python' or 'Because I don't live in Amsterdam'.)
4. Rate yourself on the wheel on your current ability to do the thing / overcome the problem (0 at the centre - 10 at the rim).
5. Ask yourself if it is possible to get to 10 (10 just means - good enough to deliver the goal).
Is there any obstacle you have written that you cannot overcome if you are truly committed to this?
Now you can:
Decide you cannot do it (and move on), OR
Decide you can, but it's not worth it (and move on), OR
BEGIN!
Now go and write YOUR story!
